Shifts in trait means and variances in North American tree assemblages: species richness patterns are loosely related to the functional space

the co-occurrence of species that are more ecologically similar than expected from a random sample of the species that could potentially colonize the study site (Keddy 1992). Filtering is thought to regulate species richness both locally and regionally, with a potentially stronger eff ect of climate at regional and continental scales, and topography, soil characteristics and land management at fi ner scales (Algar et al. 2011, Freschet et al. 2011, Lessard et al. 2012, de Bello et al. 2013; see also Terborgh 1973). Stress from cold and drought as drivers of functional trait spectra in North American angiosperm tree assemblages
Understanding how environmental change alters the composition of plant assemblages, and how this in turn affects ecosystem functioning is a major challenge in the face of global climate change. Assuming that values of plant traits express species adaptations to the environment, the trait-based approach is a promising way to achieve this goal. Nevertheless, how functional traits are related to s...
متن کاملFunctional Resilience against Climate-Driven Extinctions – Comparing the Functional Diversity of European and North American Tree Floras
Future global change scenarios predict a dramatic loss of biodiversity for many regions in the world, potentially reducing the resistance and resilience of ecosystem functions. Once before, during Plio-Pleistocene glaciations, harsher climatic conditions in Europe as compared to North America led to a more depauperate tree flora. Here we hypothesize that this climate driven species loss has als...
متن کاملContext‐dependent functional dispersion across similar ranges of trait space covered by intertidal rocky shore communities
Functional diversity is intimately linked with community assembly processes, but its large-scale patterns of variation are often not well understood. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal changes in multiple trait dimensions ("trait space") along vertical intertidal environmental stress gradients and across a landscape scale. We predicted that the range of the trait space covered by local as...
متن کاملFish assemblages and habitat ecology of River Pinder in central Himalaya, India
Snow-fed River Pinder -a tributary of River Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of...
